Wisconsin’s Thank You

“Sometimes a book is the one thing a foster child can have with them on their uncertain journey. Thank you for sharing this gift.”

In 2020, Barb’s Buddies expanded into Wisconsin where 50 kits were given to children in Dane County Foster Care. Our organizer in Wisconsin, Kristen, shared the Dane County’s August newsletter, which highlights our program as well as the kind and thoughtful thank you note she received.

Our organization was lucky to call Barb Dabrowski our friend and our hearts are so full knowing she connected us with so many volunteers who are Creating Remarkable Effects Every Day!!

2020 SC Book Flood is Filled!

Our SC Book Flood Lists are filled! Check out the great titles that are headed to teachers in South Carolina (even if the classrooms look a little different). We greatly appreciate all the donations, likes, shares, comments, etc. Teachers are greatly appreciated (mainly because our program is full of current and former teachers)!

Ms. Carter chose some fantastic books for her high school Science classroom. Everyone that we talked to kept saying, “Reading (insert book title) would have helped me so much in Science! Great book!”

Ms. Ennis will now be able to use her personal classroom set of “Le Petit Prince” in whatever way she would like this year as well as increase diversity conversations en francais with some additional choices.

Ms. Summers will use her books to help students understand their emotions, choices, and learn more about animals with her selection. We feel like some adults may benefit from reading from her collection!

Books that will help conversations with kids about race

In light of recent events, this seems like an important conversation to have with children, because “children as young as three years old, when exposed to racism and prejudice, tend to embrace and accept it, even though they might not understand the feelings.”

Thank you, EmbraceRace, for creating this list.

Book Award Nominees

Need a good book to read this weekend?

In honor of the teachers being nominated for the Illinois and South Carolina Book Flood program, which is still open, we are sharing two book lists for kids. (Book Flood Nominations are found at: www.wearecreed.org/book-flood/.)

The first is the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award list. As a prominent children’s book author in the great state of Illinois, Caudill’s Award allows children in 4th grade through 8th grade in Illinois are able to vote on their favorite book from this list.

The second list is from the South Carolina Association of School Librarians. Their book list is broken down by age group so the SC Junior Book Award, for example, is chosen by students in middle school.

Several of these books are found on both lists and we’d love to hear your recommendations!

Why we support foster children

Why do we support foster care kids?

Statistics like this are why. Foster care children need community support and additional resources as they walk into classrooms with more on their mind than their education.

This May, We Are Creed is excited to support 240 foster care children in IL, AZ, and WI through our Barb’s Buddies program with $25 gift cards to the bookstore!
